2020 will go down as the year when life came to a standstill. And yet, for Anushka Sharma, the year’s turned out to be rather eventful. In August earlier this year, the actor with her husband, Virat Kohli took social media by storm when they announced that they were expecting their first child in January 2021. (Twitter officially declared it the most-liked tweet of the year!) The news coupled with the lockdown had Sharma reaching out for all her wardrobe essentials—looks that we can certainly get on board with, notwithstanding pregnancy and lockdown.
Sharma channels a unique brand of cool minimalism that perfectly reflects in her choice of clothes. The star is Bollywood’s very own champion for less-is-more. In a recent interview with Vogue, she spoke about her fashion aesthetic at length. “Sometimes we push ourselves to wear extremely uncomfortable clothes. There are clothes meant for a specific reason—they look beautiful on screen but they’re not the most amazing clothes to wear. In my own space I want to be comfortable in what I’m wearing and, most importantly, it has to reflect me—I find it difficult to just follow trends. If a fanny pack is in fashion but I don’t like how it looks on me I’m not going to wear it,” she explained.
The actor brought in 2020 with much gusto—she and her husband were seen holidaying in Switzerland with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Varun Dhawan and Natasha Dalal. The actor shared her holiday pictures on Instagram—which featured everything from a fur coat, to puffer jackets, fur boots and cute beanies. For New Year’s Eve, Sharma sported a sexy, sequinned dress with a thigh-high slit and a pair of strappy sandals, without overdoing makeup or accessories.
Once she was back to Mumbai, it was business as usual—one of the first pictures we saw of her was a candid shot of her in her balcony, in her workout gear, captured by her husband. Incidentally, her athleisure looks are something we’ve seen a lot of this year. She made a case for pregnancy yoga with the photo of her doing a headstand, while being supported by Kohli. Just a few months prior, she was spotted in a bright yellow sports bra and black jeggings. In fact, the fit star’s workouts aren’t limited to yoga and pilates. A few weeks after her big pregnancy announcement, she had us dreaming of summer getaways with her black, ruffled swimsuit. She also scorched our July issue as cover girl, wearing a cobalt blue Hermès swimsuit.
As the year progressed along with her pregnancy, Sharma was seen bringing out a lot more of another one of her staples—cute, casual dresses. Perhaps, the most memorable was the adorable black polka-dotted number that she picked for her big baby announcement on Instagram. Shortly after that, she was seen heading into a meeting at Yash Raj Studios in a cheery yellow Anita Dongre dress and a few months later in an embroidered black dress by Shruti Sancheti.
And while Sharma is certainly the poster girl for athleisure and easy-breezy dressing, she did show her love for Indian wear every chance she could. In her classic understated style, she was spotted in a white Anita Dongre anarkali set and a pastel pink kurta palazzo set by Tokree Jaipur—looks that were in perfect sync with the rather muted festivities this year.
